If you use iCal (…and if yer a Mac OS X user, why wouldn’t you?!) this website is really cool thing. There are a bunch of calendars that people have created tracking all sorts of different things.

Among the 782 calendars on the site currently: Academy of Art College Schedule, Enterprise, NYSE Market holiday and closings schedule and jusst about every sports schedule I can imagine. It’s all neatly categorized and easy to sort through. Neat resource.

Dinner For Five

Posted in television on December 22nd, 2002 by r3v

I dunno how many people get IFC (Independent Film Channel) but it has a COOL show on it called Dinner for Five. It’s hosted by Jon Favreau (Swingers, Made, Very Bad Things) and it is, basically, what the title says it is. Dinner. For five.

Of course, there’s a little more to it than that. The five are all actors/filmmakers and they’re all sitting around chatting about making movies. It’s really quite interesting and funny. Of course, how interested one is might vary depending on which people are gathered around the dinner table.

I’ve only seen Episode Seven (with Jennifer Beals, Adam Goldberg, Dwight Yoakum, Seth Green and Jon) and another episode (with John Leguizamo, Juliette Lewis, Sean Combs, Vincent Pastore and Jon) that isn’t listed on the website. Both were very entertaining.

IFC is re-running the series, I believe. (I look forward to Episode Three… I got a thing for Sarah Silverman. :) Anyway, catch it if you can.

The Two Towers

Ok, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I’m a Tolkein
fan, but certainly no purist. There were changes made in TT that I do
question, but I won’t go into them for fear of being a spoiler-monger.
That said, I still really enjoyed the film.

Caught the midnight showing (i.e. the very first possible showing)
with some friends and coworkers and I am glad I did.

You purists out there, prepare yourselfs… but go… give it a
chance.

You NON-purists out there, ditch your stuffy purist friends and go
see this one without them. :) It’ll probably be more fun without them
telling you about how evil Peter Jackson is and the horrible things he’s
done. (feh)

*I* think Mr. Jackson has done a fantasic job of recreating the
world and characters *again* and I gotta say: The Battle of Helm’s Deep
rocked.

PS: I give it 5 out of 5 dwarves are short jokes.

Darwinism Gets Help From MTV

Posted in news on December 19th, 2002 by r3v

Yahoo is running a story about a teen that died while apparently trying to recreate a Jackass stunt.

Um, just what is the problem here? (All apologies to Denis Leary and his suicidal metal fans rant.) Apparently a bunch of stupid teens have been inspired to hurt themselves and/or endanger their lives for the amusement of their equally stupid friends. Some of them aren’t surviving the experience. Where’s the downside? I mean, you know, on the grand scheme of things…? Sure these fucking morons are leaving behind grieving families and what not… but really. These people shouldn’t even be allowed in the shallow end of the gene pool. So why should I care when they try a running-double-backflip, miss the pool completley and break their necks on the concrete? The signs say “NO RUNNING.”

Ok, maybe the whole “pool” metaphor isn’t working.

But, still. Come on. The same sort of fucknut who pulls this inane crap is probably just as likely to do something else just as suicidal and dangerous down the road. It might even endanger other people.

It seems to me MTV’s Jackass has just provided a guide on how to submit yourself to a Darwinistic (did I just make up a word?) test. I kind think half these people wouldn’t even pass a Turing test.

And they put it on TV. How bloody brilliant is that?! Kudos, MTV!

I don’t mean to sound callous… but fucking come on.

Talking Dubya Doll

Posted in funny, misc on December 14th, 2002 by r3v

TalkingPresidents.com is offering a talking George W. Bush doll. The doll says 17 different things in his actual voice. From straight-up patriotic messages to some of Bushs more humorous Bushisms. They are, of course, all sold out.

They are planning Clinton and Nixon dolls to name a couple from their proposed lineup.

Please, oh please! GIVE US QUAYLE DOLLS!

Great Googly Gadgets, Batman!

Those Google geniuses have been hard at work in the labs beneath Mount Google! They’ve got three new toys for us to play with now:

Google Viewer automatically flips through all the result pages for your search. Sort of like a slideshow. Check it out.

Webquotes let’s you view your search results with quotes about the sites from other sites. Er, that make sense? If not, just click the clicky. k?

Froogle is to be a great online catalog for webshopping. If you combine the power of Pricewatch with the power of Google… you get a great service. (Not to mention a nifty name!)

Go, go gadget google!

Smart Scripters, Stupid Thieves and a Loyal iMac

Posted in funny on December 13th, 2002 by r3v

This is actually an old story from earlier this year, or late last year perhaps. At any rate, it’s about how AppleScript helped keep personal documents safe from the prying eyes of a thief AND helped recover a stolen iMac. Kind of a fun and interesting read.

MacScripter.net compiled the article from a Usenet discussion.

New Fire can talk to iChat

Posted in Apple on December 12th, 2002 by r3v

Yay! The Fire team has finally gotten Fire to support the OSCAR protocol (again). That’s the AIM protocol that iChat uses. This means Fire users can now talk to iChat users! Yay! If you are a Fire user, go get the new version from VerstionTracker. If you’re not a Fire user, what’s wrong with you?

It’s a preference in Fire, you have to tell it to use the OSCAR protocol instead of the TOC protocol under Services.

Shrouded Isles Report

Ok, it’s a blast. The wait and anticipation were worth it. The graphics (especially the new water effects) are awesome and breath new life into the world. I like the new Midgard and Hibernian races. The Albion race, on the other hand, looks like the pale, nerdy little brother of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Go look if you don’t believe me.

At any rate, my bonedancer is wicked. Summoning skeletal warriors and other minions to do your bidding is a fun and useful hobby!
