616, not 666

Apparently, according to religionnewsblog.com (according to The Independant), it seems like 666 is NOT the number of the beast after all. It’s 616.

The Church of Satan responded to the news by saying, “Uh, yeah. We knew that. We were just messing with the Christians.”

The impact will be harsh on the metal scene. Bands around the world will be forced to revise lyrics and album covers. Tattoo artists are already trying to figure out a “6″ into a “1″.

In other news, Satan closed down 50 on the NYSE today.

PS: I just want to know: Where’d the other 50 go?

Anti-evolution stickers on schoolbooks removed

Anti-evolution stickers on schoolbooks removed: David Pescovitz:
In 2002, officials in Georgia’s Cobb County school district placed more than 30,000 stickers on textbooks stating: “This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered.” Six parents sued the school district and won. In January, a federal judge in Atlanta ruled that the stickers are unconstitutional because they violate the separation between church and state. (Background here.) This week, the stickers are finally being scraped off the books, but the school system has appealed.

Clicky the clicky for more.

I can’t believe Cobb County is still the central battleground for this ridiculous, yet important and pivotal, war between Science and the other thing… but props to the stalwart defenders of Darwin down in Georgia. Down with the truthfish!

I’m one of those that fell under the PSP (PlayStationPortable) spell cast by Sony. I’m not a big hand-held gamer, in fact the last hand-held unit I had was my Atari Lynx (that thing was bitchin!) and since then I pretty much yawned as the Gameboys and Nintendo DSs rolled by.

Then Sony announced the PSP. I didn’t want to want it… but eventually, I could not resist the specs (including wi-fi and an awesome screen), the games and most of all… PSPWare and all the hacks!

I’ve enjoyed it immensely. It’s a really kick ass unit. I hope that either Sony lightens up and allows people to write homebrew code to run on it or the hackers figure out how to do it with or without their help. Other than that the only item on my PSP wishlist is a way to “sync” wirelessly.

Mmm. Sashi lunch at Sushi-O-Sushi in Santa Clara today with Annette. Did not want to come back to work. The Sapporo did not help the motivation either. :)

Star Wars Episode 3 Spoiler-Free Review

Last night, I went with a bunch of friends and coworkers to the midnight showing of Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. (Here’s a link in case you’ve never heard of the film.)

I enjoyed the flick a lot. I’d say I was even pleasantly surprised. There was much discussion afterwards and it made me want to watch Star Wars again. As in, like, right now. Much like 1 and 2, there were some scenes and dialog that I really could have done without, but there were other scenes that seriously rocked the Force.

Things that rocked: R2, Ewan McGreggor as Obi-Wan, Palpatine, Yoda, Samuel L Jackson and Wookiees.

Clarence Stowers is a selfish bastard. - Well, that’s how the headline should have been written. This guy bought some frozen custard and found a finger in it. Ok, sure… freak out. That’s what most people would do. However, when you return to the store 30 minutes later and there’s a dude there who is missing his finger, you fucking give it back to him.

Student suspended over call from mom in Iraq - I’m sorry… when a 17 year old student gets a call from his mother who is on deployment in Iraq in the Army’s 203rd Forward Support Battalion… you simply let him take the fucking call. (I’d like to make it clear, that this story might not convey how disorderly the kid got after they insisted he hangup, and maybe he deserved punishment if he crossed the line… but my point here that it should have never come to that.)

Cory calls it "V-TV DAY", EFF calls it "an extraordinary victory"

V-TV DAY: WE WON THE BROADCAST FLAG FIGHT!: Cory Doctorow: This morning, the DC Circuit of the US Court of Appeals struck down the loathsome Broadcast Flag, ruling that the FCC does not have the jurisdiction to regulate what people do with TV shows after they’ve received them.

[Via Boing Boing.]

That’s excellent news. Check out the article at BoingBoing for more info. Go DC Circuit Court of Appeals! Go EFF! Of course, this isn’t the war… just one battle. The bad guys will take this to Congress next and the good guys are gearing up to fight again.
