Flag-Burning Amendment Fails By 1 Vote in Senate

Posted in digg, news, political, rants on June 27th, 2006 by digg

From the NYTimes (reg required, or bugmenot), via Digg:

WASHINGTON, June 27 — The Senate today fell one vote short of approving a constitutional amendment that would have enabled Congress to ban desecration of the American flag.

The vote was 66 to 34. To pass, the measure needed 67 votes.

One vote. That’s too fucking close. There are 66 Senators who either don’t get freedom of speech or don’t care about it. Additionally, I don’t think they understand patriotism either.

The whole thing reeks of a political land grab and it’s disgusting.

Micro Rice Cooker

Posted in food, misc on June 27th, 2006 by r3v

No, a “Micro Rice Cooker” is not a rice cooker for really small rice. Rather, it’s a single serving rice cooker for the microwave and it’s awesome.

I love rice. All sorts, really… but sometimes you need some good old fashioned sticky rice. However, I didn’t want to get and use a full-sized rice cooker for single servings of rice. Clean up after dinner is already chore enough.

Enter the “Micro Rice Cooker” from straight from Japan. (Straight, by way of Compact Impact in New York that is… but that’s nit picking.) Basically, it’s just a specially designed bowl perfect for microwaving rice. Add rice to the first fill line, water to the second. Let sit for 10-15, and then microwave for 15.

I got mine a few days ago and tried it out last night. It works great. Simple to use, easy to clean…and it produces good, fluffy, sticky rice. Couldn’t ask for much more. Well, instructions in English woulda been nice, but I was able to get them from the site where I bought the cooker.

Ohmigod. It’s full of links!

Posted in blog, links on June 23rd, 2006 by r3v

Avid r3v.com blog readers might notice a plethora of links being posted over the past few days. More than usual. I’ve taken to using del.ico.us for nearly all of my bookmarking needs.

This means I’m bookmarking lots of sites that I frequent, not just sites that are cool and shareable. (Of course, if I think the site is bookmarkable it must be cool, right?)

Also, after bouncing back and forth between several browsers (Firefox, Camino, and Safari mostly), I’ve landed back in the Firefox camp. The thing that pushes it over the top? Plugins.

On that note, there are plenty of plugins for Firefox that allow you to put links to your del.ico.us account… but are there any that allow for easy/automagic import of del.ico.us links into Firefox bookmarks?

Schmap’s Short List

What’s a Schmap?!

So, I got a mail from this company/website/service called Schmap. They’re asking for permission to use four of our Napa photos in one of their guides. Technically, the photos are on their short list, so I don’t know if they’ll be used or not yet, but I gave them permission after a careful read through the Terms.

I’d never heard of them before, but it turns out they make a free, downloadable travel guide. Pretty neat idea. Unfortunately, it’s Windows only right now. They’ll have a Mac version by November, though.

I collected the four photos they like into one album, in case you’re curious.
