VW GTI sled… wait, sled?!

Posted in funny, links on November 29th, 2006 by r3v

VW_GTI_sled-tn.jpgHave you ever wondered what your car would look like if it wasn’t really car, but was instead, get this, a snow sled? Yeah, I don’t smoke pot either. However, apparently there are some folks over in Germany who are on something much stronger and actually do know the answer to that wacky question. Cuz they made the sled. Not only a GTI sled, but a few others too.

Fortunately, those brave bloggers over at Carscoop (one or two? I like mine with sprinkles) found out about it and were brave enough to break the news.

The German VW shop where you can find all the sleds.

Well, Isn’t That Tidy?

I’m a big del.icio.us user and I quite like the feature that automagically posts all your newly saved links daily. However, it does clutter up the blog quite a bit, especially since I tag sites more often than I write posts.

I still want the links to be saved into the blog and show up in the RSS feed, just not cluttering the homepage. I poked around in the default WP options and found nothing to help me. Then, I noticed that this is exactly what Eric Rice is doing. I drop him a mail and forget about it for a couple days.

Then, today, I remember Eric’s on vacation and I’m not likely to get a response soon. Duh. However, I decided to take a couple minute out of my hectic workday and focus on something at least a little more fun than my job. So, I hit Google and start search on how I might get a plugin to do this or hack it myself…

Yeah. Two minutes later I found the 1 line hack on the official site. Well, it’s five lines if you like your code with pretty formatting. And I do like the pretty. I love Wordpress.

So, if you still want to see the links for some reason you can just hit up that category. (I think it might be easier to visit my page on del.icio.us.) And they’re still in the feed of course.

This might not have been very interesting to you, but this was a pretty important diversion in my workday.

Napa 06

After a great Thanksgiving, Annette and I headed up to Napa for the weekend for her birthday. On our way in, we had lunch at AppleBees so prepare for the onslaught of fermented grape juice. It was the day after T-Day and they already had Christmas music playing. WTF? And it was the most horrid music. I mentioned to Annette that songs about “being merry” should’t make me want to put a gun in my mouth. After we escaped the unmerriness, though, things looked up.

We stayed at the Old World Inn (yelp review is still forthcoming), since out longtime favorite (The Daughter’s Inn) has changed hands. To be fair, I don’t know if it has negatively impacted the service at Daughter’s, but the hosts were a big reason to stay there. Our room had a 60″ screen with an HD projector and a very nice whirlpool tub… very nice.

On Saturday, we had a driver and a towncar. This is the second time we’ve done Napa with a professional driver. Last time, it was a very enjoyable experience even though the driver didn’t know shit about Napa. This time, we had a very cool, informative driver and the experience was a hundred times better. An’ that ain’t no hyperbole, bub.

Also, I have to say, this is a GREAT time of year to go to Napa. It’s absolutely gorgeous. Most of the vines have changed color and the grass is all a vibrant green. The view from Domain Carneros really shows it off nicely.

BarterBee is awesome

Posted in games, movies, music, psp, web on November 17th, 2006 by r3v

I’ve been using the online bartering service, BarterBee, a while now and I thought I’d share my experiences. (In the interest of full disclosure, that link tells them that I sent you and I should get 5 points for each person that joins and requests an item. You get 5 points just for signing up.)

The way it works is that you sign up and list what Games, CDs and/or DVDs you have to trade. You assign a point value to each item and people use their points to buy them from you. When someone requests the item, you drop it into a Barterbee envelope, sans case, and send it off. When they get your item, you get your points.

Points, the currency of Barterbee, are worth about a dollar each. (In fact, you can actually buy points from Barterbee at that price-point. So I guess it’s exactly a dollar each.)

Thus far, my experience has been nothing but great. I’ve sold/traded off about 18 games and movies and have 4 more in transit. In every transaction I have received more value (i.e points/dollars) than I ever would have if I had I tried to sell the items to a used shop or via eBay. Sometimes as good as a 5-to-1 ratio. Often about 3.5 to 4 on PS2 games.

I’ve only requested DVDs so far. There’s a good selection of XBox games, but hardly any Xbox 360 games. No surprise there, though, the system is too new. There are also tons of games for other platforms. Even Atari 2600 games.

I haven’t used the service for Music CDs or PC/Mac games yet. I think LaLa.com, which Annette uses, may have cornered the market of the former. I plan to make use of Barterbee for the latter, whenever I can work up the energy to dig the games out of boxes.

Speaking of LaLa.com, Barterbee could learn a couple things from LaLa. I’ve watched Annette do the LaLa transactions a few times and it slighlty less cumbersome than BarterBee.
