Second, it could be coincidental, but AAPL jumped up significantly and it looks like it was due to the Boot Camp announcement. This makes me happier than the first thing. That was really more of a warm fuzzy, anyways.
Third, let me clear up the "we" in the first paragraph. I didn't work on Boot Camp, and didn't know it was coming. (Yes, we keep shit secret from each other at work. Yes, it's that tight. Yes, it makes it harder to do things.) So, for me, it was a pleasant surprise.
Enough with the meta-commentary, now, on with the actual thoughts on the matter...
For a while, I thought I'd never run Windows on my Mac. I've been enjoying the feeling of being a Microsoft free household since I dismantled the pee-cee a couple of years ago. (That's right, I don't run MS Office either. Go, go, NeoOffice!) So, why would I ever reconsider? The obvious answer is: Gaming. However, it's not as simple as that... it's not that Windows has so many more games than the Mac, although it most certainly does, but rather that there are specific games that are Windows only. Especially games from smaller developers, like say Flying Lab, who's developing a Pirate MMO. I'd also take a peak at Auto Assault and City of Villains.
Anyways, the offering from Apple is nice because it allows you do do the XP thing, but in a much less hacky manner. The fact that Boot Camp makes a CD of all the drivers you are going to need for Windows is a total blessing. Windows drivers are a pain in the ass. Also, the included live partition maker is pretty sweet.
When all is said and done, I think Boot Camp (and the XP project at OnMac.net, for that matter) is cool, but I really would much rather have an Windows Application layer running in OS X, as opposed to rebooting to switch operating systems. That way I could run whatever Windows apps I wanted right in my beloved Mac OS X.
I haven't tried it yet, and don't know when I will. See, the thing is... it requires a DVD with WindowsXP+SP2... and I only have the original XP disc. The thought of giving Microsoft more money, just for a disc, when I already have a license is enough to make my stomach churn. >.<
