Testing the iPhone WordPress app

Posted in blog, test on July 22nd, 2008 by r3v

Just a quick test of the Wordpress for iPhone app. Pretty slick so far. Seems like it’s really easy to add photos to the post straight from the phone, but I’m not sure how to control where they will display. (The preview, which is quite nice, indicates the pics will be at the end of the post.)

So far, my only other complaint is that there are no tools to affect font style and hand typing tags is a bitch. (It also makes linking a real PITA.)

I like the idea of a Local Drafts vs Drafts on the server. Seems pretty easy to post a draft, and then touch it up on a desktop before publishing, if necessary. Let’s see how well the phone app handles editing a draft on the server, if it’s been modified after the phone app posted it. The answer is Not Bad. The pictures convert from being detached objects to urls to the now posted images… And if you add a pic to a draft, the same thing happens. Moving the location of the image is nigh-impossible on the phone (ok, now I really want copy n’ paste), but is pretty easy to do online.  It makes me glad that the WP admin interface got an overhaul.

Now, I need to check out the WP mobileadmin plugin, and the WP iPhone Theme plugin.

Now on A2Hosting.

Posted in blog, web on October 26th, 2007 by r3v

If you’re seeing this message, that means the new nameservers are doing their jobs. Yay.

I’ve been shopping for a new web host for ages. I found A2Hosting a while back, and liked what the had to offer quite a bit. I was then prompted to pull the trigger when Merlin Mann offered a 20% off FOR LIFE code over on his blog, 43Folders. (I won’t post the code here, you gotta go to Merlin’s blog to get it.) So, here I am. If you are in need of a good hosting service, take a look at A2Hosting’s info. If you want feedback from me, personally, though… come back in a few months. :)

PS: Something is messed up with the install/setup. Many links are 404, atm. Working on it, but it may be later this weekend.

PPS: Awesome. Moshu over at the Wordpress support forums set me on the right track to fix the problem. Bonus fix: My RSS feeds are back.

Web Homeless

Posted in blog on March 2nd, 2007 by r3v

Apparently, from what I can gather, I am about to become web homeless. I need to find a new web hosting service. If anyone has suggestions, drop me an email. Otherwise, I’ll throw a dart at the wall this weekend.

Then I’ll look online.

CommentSpam On The Rise

Posted in blog on February 5th, 2007 by r3v

I have 97 comments are awaiting moderation. I believe that 100% of them are spam. I was beginning to think that Akismet (the Wordpress anti-spam plugin) was falling down on the job. Yeah, I was thinking that until that I saw that it had caught over 12,090 spam comments. Ok, I guess that’s a pretty good percentage. heh.

Unlike the email spam that I see which is usually limited to 2 or 3 different topics, the blogspam seems to have no such focus. Spam topics in this batch range from
“fatty liver disease” to “group lesbian porn”. (Stop clicking that, it’s not a link.)

CommentSpam is interesting because unlike email spam and other advertising attempts, they are not trying to get to your eyes through my blog. They’re trying to get to Google’s. It’s all about the pagerank. Obnoxious.

Well, Isn’t That Tidy?

I’m a big del.icio.us user and I quite like the feature that automagically posts all your newly saved links daily. However, it does clutter up the blog quite a bit, especially since I tag sites more often than I write posts.

I still want the links to be saved into the blog and show up in the RSS feed, just not cluttering the homepage. I poked around in the default WP options and found nothing to help me. Then, I noticed that this is exactly what Eric Rice is doing. I drop him a mail and forget about it for a couple days.

Then, today, I remember Eric’s on vacation and I’m not likely to get a response soon. Duh. However, I decided to take a couple minute out of my hectic workday and focus on something at least a little more fun than my job. So, I hit Google and start search on how I might get a plugin to do this or hack it myself…

Yeah. Two minutes later I found the 1 line hack on the official site. Well, it’s five lines if you like your code with pretty formatting. And I do like the pretty. I love Wordpress.

So, if you still want to see the links for some reason you can just hit up that category. (I think it might be easier to visit my page on del.icio.us.) And they’re still in the feed of course.

This might not have been very interesting to you, but this was a pretty important diversion in my workday.

Back From Not Being Gone

Posted in blog on September 5th, 2006 by r3v

Yeah, r3v.com went a little silent for the month of August. Maybe I was in silent rumination over the aspect of turning 34? Or, perhaps I was on an extended vacation, recharging my weary power-cells? Possibly, I simply had nothing to say?

Or, maybe, I got lazy. Yeah, that mighta been it.

Ohmigod. It’s full of links!

Posted in blog, links on June 23rd, 2006 by r3v

Avid r3v.com blog readers might notice a plethora of links being posted over the past few days. More than usual. I’ve taken to using del.ico.us for nearly all of my bookmarking needs.

This means I’m bookmarking lots of sites that I frequent, not just sites that are cool and shareable. (Of course, if I think the site is bookmarkable it must be cool, right?)

Also, after bouncing back and forth between several browsers (Firefox, Camino, and Safari mostly), I’ve landed back in the Firefox camp. The thing that pushes it over the top? Plugins.

On that note, there are plenty of plugins for Firefox that allow you to put links to your del.ico.us account… but are there any that allow for easy/automagic import of del.ico.us links into Firefox bookmarks?

Akismet > Spam

Posted in blog on May 21st, 2006 by r3v

A few weeks ago, my site was hit with comment spam bombs. Essentially, there was a crater where my blog used to be and a mushroom cloud of spam above. Of course, it didn’t look like this to any readers, since comments from unapproved users get shoved into a queue and await my blessing. Behind the scenes, however, I unleashed a stream of profanity that would’ve made George Carlin blush.

So, I went looking for anti-spam tools. Akismet is the one WordPress seems to recommend, so I started there. And, so far so good. Akismet captures about 98% of the spam. (It’s true, I did the math. It’s exactly 98.1% over the last week.) It claims to have caught 932 comments since I installed it, however I know that it’s stats are off because I’ve been loosely keeping track and therefore I know that it’s lowballing it. It’s actually caught closer to 1600 comments. What’s even more impressive is the fact that I’ve seen zero false positives.

So, let’s see… what was the point of all this? Oh yes, fuck you spammers. Fuck you in the neck.

Work pb setup

Work pb setupWork pb setup, originally uploaded by r3v||cls.
I was trying to describe the funky laptop holder I have for my powerbook at work, and I figured a picture was easier. A thousand words and all that.

Also a nice opportunity to use the camera in my new phone, so I can see if it’s better. Also testing emailing to Flickr and posting to the blog.

Thrilling stuff. This is a lovely example of the imagery that fills my day. Heh.

(Third retry… mucking with the formatting template.)

Technorati_Tags or Technorati Tags or TechnoratiTags?

Posted in blog on April 4th, 2006 by r3v

(Warning! Danger, Will Robinson! The following post is very boring!)

I like Technorati. It’s a neat way to see what’s being discussed in the Arena of Blogs (searching for a better term than blogosphere… maybe blog-o-drome?). Also, tagging is a great organizational tool. It helps me not only categorize the post better, but also organize my thoughts and keep that particular post on topic.

However, I keep coming across the need to use multi-word tags. For example, in the prior post about comic books, I tagged it with “comics” and “comic books”.

So, the dilemma is… how do you deal with the space? ComicBooks, no space? Comic_Books, with the underscore? Or, all fancy-like with the space entity: Comic%20Books? That last one means you have to put a %20 in the URL, but remove it form the linked text so it still looks pretty.

The annoying thing is that there appears to be no consensus. All three of those types of tags get you results on Technorati when you go look. (Oddly enough, when I searched comicbooks my last post came up, even though I went the %20 route. so maybe this is all moot?)

To further irritate educate myself, I also found a fourth method this morning: the plus+sign. >.<
