Vote For Me

Posted in misc, personal, political on September 1st, 2007 by r3v

I turned 35 today. That’s the minimum age to run for the office of the President of the United States of America. So, I’m in. Let’s do this. Just one problem, my fellow Americans. It costs a lot of money to run for President. So, to help America, I must first ask you to help me.

r3v for president.
Let’s stir some shit up, America.

PS: Thanks to my wonderful Annette for a fabulous night full of stuff they don’t let you do once you become President. ;) (We celebrated a night early to avoid the paparazzi.)

iPhone, five days later

Posted in Apple, misc, personal, review on July 5th, 2007 by r3v

This won’t be an in depth review, since I think there’s enough of those out there. In that area, I highly recommend Engadget’s very in-depth iPhone review. They claim that it’s “the only review of it you’re going to need” and I think they are almost right.

I’d add that John Gruber’s iPhone First Impressions post over at the awesome DaringFireball blog is a great supplement. (Arguably, Mr Gruber is an Apple fan and an outspoken one at that. However, do not be mistaken. There’s no blind faith and he’s far from an uncritical apologist. All those qualities together make him my favorite Mac blogger.)

So, anyways, here goes:

Grr. Must attend TAM 6. (In 2008… argh.)

Posted in personal, skepticism on February 1st, 2007 by r3v

About this time last year, I blogged about missing The Amazing Meeting 4.

So, it’s time for my new, unfortunate, annual tradition of bitching about missing this year’s TAM.

Unlike last year, I knew exactly when TAM 5 was coming. However, I just couldn’t make it work. I guess that is, perhaps, one step closer to actually attending. Knowing beforehand that I wasn’t going to make it was supposed to soften the blow of not actually going.

However, coverage of this year’s event is so much better than last year’s that it’s almost painful. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful for all the bloggers and podcasters that are talking about it and I’m enjoying the discussions and interviews. It is, however, a stark reminder that I did not go.

So, now I vow to go to TAM 6. (This is different from last year’s statement of intent because I used the word “vow”. It’s a very strong word, you know.) I can’t believe it’s a year away.

50 things you may or may not know about cls/r3v

Posted in personal on December 28th, 2006 by r3v

So, I’ve seen a few friends do this on their blogs recently. It’s pretty simple. Just a list of 50 things about yourself. However, I wasn’t sure I could do it without padding it a bit. So, I had to give it a go. Here it is:

- I dislike talking about myself, yet I have a blog… and am doing this stupid list thing.
- I am a mutli-geek: tech, comics, movies, gaming, sci-fi, fantasy…
- I am a technocrat. I consider luddites to be the enemy.
- I am a Junior College drop-out.
- I have worked for Apple Computer for over a decade… and I didn’t mean to.
- I want to be a writer when I grow up.
- I am an INTJ. Heavy on the I, heavy on the J.
- I am a good communicator, when it doesn’t involve my personal life.
- I dislike all the popular American sports. Give me Soccer, Hockey and Martial Arts.
- I am an only child.
- I have tons of cousins, but talk to none of them regularly.
- I am an atheist. I was not raised that way.
- I have religious friends, but rarely discuss religion with most of them.
- I am a vehement skeptic.
- I like television and think people who discount it, or any medium, outright are stupid.
- I have two tattoos and plans for at least half a dozen more. My mom knows none of this.
- I am a fiscally conservative and socially liberal moderate. Do whatever you want… over there.
- I have a lot of caustic friends. I’m not so happy about it.
- I am a beer snob.
- I got busted for shoplifting as a kid.
- I am an unconvicted (i.e. never caught) felon.
- I believe more in the spirit of the law than the letter. We gamer geeks call that Chaotic Good.
- I find it to be uncomfortable drinking alcohol around my non-drinker friends.
- I am an ex-smoker and I started smoking relatively late in life (20s).
- I have been playing MMORPGs since they were called MUDs.
- I haven’t dated many women, but when I was 17 I went out with a smokin’ 22 year old. Go me.
- I sometimes wish I had joined the military at 18, even though it would have disappointed my (Navy) dad.
- I’m a music junkie and like most genres.
- I have enough “guilty pleasure” music to fill an iPod nano.
- I have a fragile ego and I know it.
- I am egotistical about one thing: I think I’m funny. Even if it’s only to a minority of people.
- I am easily embarassed.
- I try to blend into the background, yet I am 6′3″ and have long hair and visible tattoos.
- I have learned and forgotten how to play three musical instruments.
- I think guns are cool. Yes, that’s right. I said: I think guns are cool.
- I have never lived outside the SF Bay Area, and I’m ok with that.
- I hate my voice, but wish I could sing.
- I’m not big on photos or videos of myself either.
- I am a patriot and I despise blind allegiance.
- I have horrible organizational abilities, but continue to make valiant attempts.
- I am prone to out of sight, out of mind.
- I did not get along with my father, yet I miss him still.
- I used to do Renn Faire. In the summer, I still miss wearing kilts.
- I know that there are more people that call me friend than I count as friends.
- I believe in the legalization of most drugs, but can’t stand to hang around potheads and tweakers.
- I am an omnivore. I don’t get meat & potatoes folk or vegetarians.
- I have a genetic disorder that causes me to be prone to lung collapses.
- I have definite real world heroes. Among them: Mark Twain, James Randi, Norman Borlaug, Groucho Marx, Chuck Jones, Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith…
- I wrote this list while drinking a cocktail and playing World of Warcraft.
- I don’t believe in fate, but I’m in love with a girl that seems to have been made for me. And yes, I saved that for last.

There ya go. Despite being somewhat introspective, I’m not particularly fond of myself as topic.. so this list was harder than it seems.

Boo is home.

New look for Boo?

So, I brought Boo home today. He’s still shaved in several places and so I thought it was time to take an unflattering picture. (He actually looks a little better than the picture when he’s walking around or eating… but I waited for the more unflattering shot possible. heh.)

The last 48 hours have been a real rollercoaster. Two nights ago the prognosis was a bad as it could be with out being 100% negative. The next morning, it was almost completely reversed and he’s been on the upswing since.

So, he’s home and doing a lot better. He started grooming himself once I got him home, which is a good sign. He’s on a regimen of pills, and I expect that to be really fun over the next few days.

It’s been a tough week. He’s a fairly small animal, but it’s amazing how much space he takes up in my home. My apartment has been very empty without him.

So, on that note… thanks for all the well wishes and inquiries to his well-being. I hope this concludes my series of entries on Boo. :)

Boo :(

Posted in misc, personal on April 16th, 2006 by flickr

BooBoo :(, originally uploaded by r3v||cls.

Boo is not feeling well. He had surgery on his mouth on Thursday and has been convalescing in his “I don’t feel good spot”. Saturday, his appetite still hadn’t returned, so we took him to the vet ER. He got hydrated and put on more meds. I’m now giving him pain meds and antibotics twice a day, as well as an anti-inflammatory once a day. That’s less than fun, because you have to pry open his mouth; where he had his surgery. Makes me feel mean every time I do it.

He still won’t eat on his own, but I can get him to eat baby food off of my finger. (No, not off the plate seen in the picture, it apparently tastes better off my finger.) Since you most likely dont know Boo, I should point out that him not eating is a bit like me not being sarcastic. It’s a bad sign.

Poor Boo. It’s very depressing and I feel bad for him.

This concludes my blog entry about my cat. Later I will post about what I had for dinner or something. Or maybe the weather.

r3v.com now runs WordPress.

Posted in blog, personal on March 1st, 2006 by r3v

(If you’re reading this via the feed, then this is old news… you already know I changed blog software. If you’re reading it via the web…)

Hi. You might notice some changes. Please, keep in mind I’m not ANYWHERE near finishing the UI/Aesthetics and haven’t put up all my pages yet. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the new site so I could refrain from posting to two blogs at once.

I’ve moved to WordPress for my blog software.

Blosxom has been a GREAT blog system and served my needs for years. It’s great software for those that want to tinker with the (Perl) code and make some of their own hacks. It’s light-weight and elegantly written.

However, I’ve decided I wanted a more robust blog capable of communicating with services such as technorati, del.ico.us, flickr, digg, and using stuff like trackbacks, pings and (for NOW) comments… etc; without having to do the hacking myself. I have more fun projects in mind. Some less fun ones too, but those pay.

So, anyways, say hello to Wordpess. (Ciao, Blosxom. It’s been fun. I’ll still sing your praises when appropriate.)

The new RSS feed URL is: http://r3v.com/?feed=rss2

New Site Is Live

Posted in personal on September 1st, 2004 by r3v

r3v.com is the new site.
r3v/rss is the new feed.

No more blog posts to www.the-cantina.com/cls.

Eventually, most of the other content that’s there will make it’s way over here. For now, the Files and Projects sections are empty (as far as you can see) but I’ll start to fill them in fairly quickly as I decide what to keep and what to toss. (Don’t worry, the epic Vending Machine Tales will make it’s way over here somehow. heh.)

The new site is CSS. It’s been a long time in coming, but I finally just bit the bullet and dove into it. (Sorry for the mixed metaphor.) I think it took a desire to redesign the site entirely to make an opportunity to learn CSS. The idea of converting the old site was just unappealing. Anyhow, I am happy with the new look.

I have not created my email address(es) with the new domain yet. As always, the best way to get ahold of me is via the mac.com account anyways.

I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do with the old site yet.

New Site, New Domain coming

Posted in personal on August 26th, 2004 by r3v

On September 1st, I’ll be launching my new personal web site on a new domain name with a new web host. How exciting is that? What?! Well, you don’t have to be rude about it!

At any rate, don’t expect many blog posts in the meantime. I don’t wanna have to replicate too much. What? You weren’t expecting any to begin with? Man, yer full of attitude.
